Helping Hand Appeal July 19-28th 2003

The Helping Hand Appeal is New Zealands way of helping children and communities right here in our own country.

Last year over 6000 school children participated in the Helping Hand Appeal to raise donations for Community Development Projects for Kiwi children & families in need.

Project AWHI brings the expertise and skills to ensure that long term changes at grass roots level happen. Mr Sam Chapman, founder of Project AWHI & long term Board member of one of the largest aid agencies in New Zealand brings the same experience that has been applied to overseas development to our own door step. "One shot, quick fix ups are not the solution", reports Sam, "we must ensure that families and whole communites are givien tools and access to support that ensures they themselves can change their circumstances - this is real change, meaniful and long term - this is what Project AWHI does".

A message from Norm Hewitt
(Representative to the Commissioner for Children)

Last year NZ, from just 4 aid agencies raised $54 million to help needy communities overseas - Imagine what just a little of that could do in kids lives that desperately need a helping hand. Make a donation and your support goes to frontline projects to help kiwi kids and families. In education, family support projects, emergency aid and more.

Norm Hewitt

With a little help, he’s the next Albert Einstein!

He’s 5, he’s full of energy, and he’s working a Pentium  1000 htz personnel computer!

After school each day he comes to work at the AWHI Online School, based in his community. He video conferences with our online teacher, he does his homework, and today he is designing his own car!

He is just one of the many hundreds of lives this last year that Kiwi’s have supported through Project AWHI community development initiatives.

This year we have set some ambitious targets to continue the work. We are not afraid of hard work and know with the backing from Kiwi’s, that many more children, families and whole communities in real need here in New Zealand will be given the right resources and access to grass root projects that are life changing!

Such initiatives as Project Endure that embraces the needs of at risk youth and their families by providing a safe environment for creative expression of learning in such areas as life skills, employment skills and social awareness. A new initiative for the 2003/04 year is the implementation of Project AWHI Rangatahi a frank and powerful programme that targets children aged 6 to 16 years of age and their families from gang communities. For us turning our back on problems isn’t a solution – rediscovery of our God given potential is!

This year we need $ 380,000 to fund these nationwide community development projects. That is 1273 AWHI sponsors, willing to give a little of themselves to see a massive change in a Kiwi child or family in need. Please make a pledge to Project AWHI by calling 0800-4-sponsor (0800-477-667), or by making a donation at any New Zealand Post Shop or requeasting more information click here.
